It is believed that the craft was manned by Ens. Akira Hiroo (L) and PO1c Yoshio Katayama (R)
At 0637 USS Ward's officer of the deck, Lt. (jg) William O. "Oscar" Goepner, summoned his skipper, Lt.William W. Outerbridge, who at 0640 ordered his destroyer to attack.  At precisely 0645, December 7, 1941, the crew of Ward's gun mount No. 3 fired.  The members of hte gun crew were Edward J. Bukrey, Joseph V. Fluegel, John A. Peick, Harold P. Flanagan, Russell H. Knapp, Ambrose A. Domagall, Raymond B. Nolde, Karl C. J. Lasch, and Clarence W. Fenton.  The first shot missed, but the second scored a solid hit.

Thus the first shot of the attck on Oahu came from an American destroyer, not a Japanese aircraft.

A US plane, Catalina No. 14-P-1, piloted by William P. Tanner, participated in this action.  Tanner, copilot Robert B Clark, and navigator Donald H. Butler had taken off from Kaneohe on a routine antisubmarine patrol.  Sighting what they thought to be an American submarine in difficulties, Tanner obligingly dropped two float lights.  When, to their surprise, Ward attacked the submarine, Tanner and his collegues joined in, dropping one of the PBY's depth charges.  So both Patrol Wing Two and Ward claimed the sinking.  Although the order in which the midget submarines met their deaths cannot be determined with certainty, the vessel's positions suggests that this first submarine might well have been the craft manned by Akira Hiroo and Yoshio Katayama.
