Edward P. Manion was born on November 14, 1922 in Decatur, Illinois, the son of Mrs. and Mr. Richard Manion of Campbell's Island. Young Manion joined the navy on November 14, 1940 and after the usual preliminary training at Great Lakes was sent to the west coast where he was assigned to ship duty. He has been in Hawaii and stationed at Pearl Harbor since April of 1941.He enlisted in the Navy in November, 1940. Mr. Manion attended and graduated from East Moline schools before enlisting in the navy. He was a seaman second class assigned to the USS Arizona. He was declared missing in action shortly after the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.
On January 29, 1942, his family was officially notified of his death aboard the battleship Arizona by the Department of the Navy. The message came from Rear Admiral Randall Jacobs of the Bureau of Identification and stated that after a thorough and exhaustive search the war department was unsuccessful in location of Edward Paul Manion, previously reported among the Pearl Harbor casualties. He was 19 years old. |
