"The Japanese have robbed me of my greatest treasure on earth," Mr. Lewis said, in commenting upon the news of his son's death, "he died without a chance of striking one blow at the Japs." Young Lewis was the youngest child of Mr. Lewis, and the only son. His mother died when he was about 16 yrs. old. Before enlising in the navy at the Spartanburg recruiting station at the age of 19, young Lewis was a popular and well-known resident of Arcadia. He was a member of the Legion Memorial Baptist Church, where he was active in Sunday School affairs, and also a member of the Order of DeMolay. He was a student at Fairforest high school and also a member of the Boy Scouts of America. |
