I am in possession of a reading lamp made on the USS Arizona in 1939 by a ships carpenter named Albert J Konnick, this man is listed on the casualty list and was from Pennsylvania. It also says on the bottom of the lamp that he also made a model of the Arizona. He supposedly made these to sell for extra money. On the bottom of the lamp it is written who made it and when.
My daughter is a paralegal working for two attorneys in Wilkes Barre, PA. She was given the job of clearing out a man's house that had passed away. His survivors gave her a free hand in auctioning off all the things in the house. After the auction (about 2 weeks) she asked me to clear out everything that was left. I found the lamp and just couldn't bring myself to toss it in the dumpster. I called her and asked if I could keep it. So that is how I came into possession of it.
The man who passed away would have been the uncle of the man who purchased the lamp from Mr. Konnick. He sent it to his mother in 1940 as a Christmas gift. The young man who bought the lamp also went down with the ship as we understand it. |
