Doyle was in charge of an aircraft mechanic section. He survived the first wave attack and was rallying his men to get more American planes into the air when the second wave came. He grabbed a tommy gun and engaged the Japanese planes attacking the field until he was killed by the concussion from a bomb. He shot down at least one and damaged several Japanese planes and received the Distinguished Service Cross posthumously.
Doyle is buried at Huntington, Texas, where the family lived. |
