Johnnie Housel enlisted in the Navy on March 16, 1932. He was stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Station in Illinois for four months and then was sent to San Pedro, California. In 1940 he was transferred to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii aboard the U.S.S. ARIZONA. On December 7, 1941, Japanese fighter pilots bombed the ship and blew it out of the water. Johhnie was awarded the Purple Heart along with the traditional folded flag upon his death. Johnnie's name is inscribed on the Tablets of the Missing of the Honolulu Memorial, National Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii. His name is also inscribed on the marble wall at the site of the sunken ship.
